So far you ve looked at two ways in which most applications, scripting additions, and AppleScript refer to files, folders, and disks: path strings and file specifiers. The other way you can refer to files, folders, and disks is using the Finder and System Events applications. Both of these applications treat files, folders, and disks as individual objects in a well-structured object model whose structure is defined in the application s dictionary. Each application also provides various commands for performing actions on objects in its object model, allowing AppleScripts to perform a wide range of file system operations: creating, copying, moving, renaming, and deleting files and folders; erasing and ejecting disks; and obtaining lots of useful information about these items as well. You ll look at System Events in 15; for now, you ll concentrate on the Finder.

Like most scriptable applications, the top object in the Finder s object model is the application object. Each mounted disk on your Mac is represented as a disk element of this application object. Each of these disk objects has various file and folder elements representing the files and folders contained by that disk; in turn, each of those folder objects has file and folder elements . . . and so on. Figure 14-3 shows a simplified view of this containment structure. Notice how folder elements can contain their own folder and file elements all the way to infinity (or at least until the Finder decides it has had enough!).

The first step is to get comfortable with the various windows and how to manage them. JDeveloper splits the IDE into a number of windows, each of which contains its own content and can be managed and positioned independently of the other windows.

Like other scriptable applications, the Finder uses AppleScript s English-like object reference forms to refer to objects within this object model. For example, let s say you have a file named chocolate.jpg on your desktop. (Figure 14-4 shows the Finder s file/folder/disk containment structure.)

Like all AppleScript references, this one begins by identifying the desired object, so it starts by specifying the document file element named chocolate.jpg in the folder element named Desktop, and it works its way back to the Finder s top-level application object. Figure 14-5 highlights the full route taken by this reference in gray. One slight difference you might notice between the Finder reference and alias reference is that the reference identifies the disk Macintosh HD using a property, startup disk, rather than an element reference form, disk "Macintosh HD". The Finder knows this particular volume is my start-up disk, so it automatically uses startup disk to make this obvious. You ll learn more about this in 15.

Upon starting JDeveloper, you might find that your windows are laid out differently from the layout shown in Figure 3-1. One trick, which is also useful if your window layout becomes a bit messy, is to reset the windows to their default position. This can be done by selecting Window | reset Windows to Factory Setting, which will reset JDeveloper to show the default windows in their default positions.

On the basis of his path-breaking 1952 article, Markowitz became the father of modern portfolio theory (MPT)17 At the same time, Roy (1952) published an article on the same topic with similar conclusions and a clear theoretical framework18 The 1952 article on portfolio selection by Markowitz proposed expected (mean) return, and variance of return, of the portfolio as a whole as criteria for portfolio selection, both as a possible hypothesis about actual behavior and as a maxim for how investors ought to act The article assumed that beliefs or projections about securities follow the same probability rules that random variables obey.
